Daylily
Daylilies are beautiful, low maintenance perennials. Showy flowers bloom on stalks that rise above the narrow, sword-shaped foliage. Use in mass plantings, as an edging, on slopes for erosion control and, of course, in perennial borders.
I live best in full sun. (8 hrs or more). I will grow in partial shade (4-8 hours of direct sunlight), but with a reduced number of blooms.
I like nearly any type of soil. The addition of composted manure and or yard compost will assure I stay a healthy. These products help to nurture me, hold moisture and aerate the soil.
When you plant me please dig a hole large enough for the roots without bending or crowding them. Place the plant in the soil so the crown (the portion where the stem and root meets) is one inch below the ground line. Water thoroughly after planting.
I perform best in evenly moist soil, though I tolerate wet or dry conditions. I am not a heavy feeder, but can benefit from early spring and early fall applications of a well balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10.
A few tips to ensure your success when growing me:
- Deadhead spent flowers daily for neatness and remove stems (called scapes) when flowers have completed bloom
- As the plants grow and get larger over the years, they will benefit from being divided. See Dividing Perennials Fact Sheet.
- Daylilies are similar to all other perennials in that they will benefit from a light winter mulch.
